The Challenge & Objective
As one of the world’s most famous sportswear brands, Umbro required a digital storefront capable of matching its century-long global reputation. The legacy platform faced technical limitations, so the objective was a future-ready, modern website: one that could launch product ranges and limited-edition collaborations easily, support dedicated campaign landing pages without developer intervention, and hold up under peak-traffic launch days and seasonal sales.
Our Solution
mtc built a bespoke eCommerce solution within our own custom CMS, unifying Umbro’s B2B and B2C ranges in a single architecture. The build was SEO-led, mobile-first, and developed for speed and flexibility, expanding the site’s reach while converting and retaining both casual lookers and loyal fans. It also supports a range of payment options through the STYLEman EPOS integration.
The Impact
By refining the user experience, modernising the design, and addressing market demand with a bespoke SEO strategy, mtc set new standards for digital performance. In the first year after launch, website traffic rose 49.3%, total sessions 100.3%, and average purchase value 14.1%, with 875.5% of the purchase-event growth coming through organic search:
- +1,002.3% increase in purchase events
- +110.2% increase in active users
- −23.3% decrease in bounce rate
Insights
Brands often invest in a run of large, expensive campaigns through the year, alongside smaller releases, only to see traffic spike briefly while activity stays flat. That usually comes down to technical performance, bugs and blockers, or unexpected user flows. Clarity and ease of navigation are not only accessibility measures, they are retention and SEO measures that convert into revenue.
As we look at the current eCommerce landscape in 2026, there are three areas that even global brands sometimes lose focus on. Taking our work for Umbro as an example, here are the things to consider for your own site when you take a step back to assess performance.
What we found by working on Umbro:
Refining the UI and building a mobile-first experience for “Shop Now” interactions is what drove the 23.3% decrease in bounce rate. On mobile, the path to the product has to be effortless or people leave.
High-resolution hero imagery, such as the Home Collection 2026, has to load instantly. If a visitor waits for it to render, they skip past it, ignore it, or move on to a competitor.
Acquiring a customer in 2026 is more expensive than ever. If someone browses or buys a single item, acquisition costs eat the margin. The goal is to move from a single product to a full basket, through upsells, brand buy-in, and retention.
Some challenges for your own site:
Take your phone off Wi-Fi and load your primary campaign landing page on mobile data alone. Do your key calls to action and imagery load quickly and cleanly? What happens on a weak signal, or outdoors in bright light?
Look at your top-selling products. What information or add-on is missing from the landing page that would turn a single purchase into a larger basket or a repeat one, and how easy is it to bridge that gap today?
Success in 2026 is not just about traffic, it is about what you do with it once it arrives. Umbro’s 110.2% increase in active users came from tailored campaigns that assess the full user journey and answer real market demand.
